Obama Politicizes The Olympics By Verv Tue Jul 08, 2008 - The Olympics were established in the time of the Greeks as an event where everyone could set aside politics and war, lay down their weapons, and watch the best athletes compete against one another. However, in modern times we are now moving as best as we can to take away the part about setting politics aside and would like to put pressure on the very nations which host the games. This from The Associated Press: Democrat Barack Obama took issue Monday with President Bush's decision to attend the opening ceremonies of the Olympic Games, saying he would go to Beijing only if he saw progress between the Chinese government and the Dalai Lama.So we see what Obama's vision for the world is: activism against our largest trade partner at a very prideful moment for them. To the Chinese, the Olympics does not mean anything political but rather comes off as a great honor that they are playing host to the world's greatest athletes. When folks like Obama politicize it they open up a can of worms where one simply need not be opened -- it's like not showing up to your friend's birthday party out of protest that he didn't invite the Dalai Lama. Obama likes to pretend we have no business fighting malicious dictators like Hussein who actively seek more power, yet he is so certain of his position that he would boycott the Olympics’ opening ceremony held by our largest trade partner over a sticky political situation that is decades old. When it involves fighting dictators who massacre their own people and seek WMDs he wants to retreat. When it comes trade partners embroiled in an ancient debate of domestic politics to which there is no clear answer he is ready to take his stand, right next to the hippies, burning the bra of pacifist collectivism in the face of a billion people trying to enjoy the Olympics and not turn it into a disgusting political debate.
