Zawahiri Speaks...in English
By Rizzuto

Mon Aug 11, 2008 - Uh oh, a new Zawahiri tape. He must be serious this time! This from Agence France-Presse:
Ayman al-Zawahiri, the second-in-command to Al-Qaeda chief Osama bin Laden, has released his first English-language video call for jihad in Pakistan, the US-based IntelCenter said Sunday.

The message was aired on Pakistan's ARY television network, IntelCenter said in a statement, adding that it marked "the first official message ever ... in which he speaks English."

Zawahiri "calls for the people to support jihad in Pakistan and lists a litany of grievances against the Pakistani government and US involvement there," said IntelCenter, which monitors extremist websites and communications.
Why would he decide to all of a sudden make his English speaking debut? My guess, and take it with a grain of salt, is publicity stunt. Think about it, how many audio tapes and video's has Zawahiri released in the past year? By all measure his output of media has increased since bin Laden has become increasingly isolated. He is becoming more and more marginalized as al Qaeda suffers defeat in Iraq, and fails to make good on promises of attacks in the West. Zawahiri's credibility is fading, as is the al Qaeda network's.

In other words, another Zawahiri rant is no longer news. A Zawahiri rant in English though...that might just make headlines. This is al Qaeda's version of a nip slip during the Superbowl. Desperation is a stinky cologne Doctor Zawahiri.
