Bill O’Reilly is a populist pinhead
By Rizzuto

Thu Sep 25, 2008 - Those on the right and left who are feigning righteous indignation at the “evil corporations” or “heartless Wall Street” are taking the otherwise complex issue of the financial meltdown, and simplifying it in order to appeal to their audience…or so they think. In fact what they’re doing is treating their viewers and listeners like simpletons and idiots. American's are grown ups, they can take a little bit of truth now and again.

On today’s Radio Factor, Bill O went on a tirade calling other talk show hosts who don’t share his one sided and simplistic assessment of our current financial crisis dishonest. Check out the audio at Johnny Dollar’s Place. During his nearly three minute long screed, O’Reilly goes on to blame rich, cigar chomping, private jet flying talk radio hosts of misleading and lying to their audiences about the bailout and the financial meltdown. Ironically, it’s rich, cigar chomping, private jet flying talk show host Bill O who’s misleading and lying to you.

I’m not saying that some of the blame doesn’t fall with the big lenders and institutes. AIG, Fannie and Freddie, and Lehman Brothers of course deserve their share of the blame. So does the Bush administration, and so does the congress. But let’s face reality, a lot of our problems emanate from a lot of irresponsible people taking out loans. To ignore that facet is to willfully ignore relevant details. Another relevant detail O’Reilly fails to ignore is the extent to which government regulation created the market for these types of mortgages (he touches on it at the end…but O’s tone pisses me off anyway.)

O’Reilly is known for pulling this populist crap. When the price of a barrel of oil dropped a few weeks ago he was using a similar narrative with the gas prices. Look what happens when Cavuto confronts him with some inconvenient details.

Instead of attempting to have a dialogue, O’Reilly replaces actual understanding of oil prices with (self) righteous populist anger, and shouts down Cavuto when he tries to bring rationale into the debate. Typical Bill O. Typical populist.
