Democrats felt "no pressure" to vote for bailout
By Rizzuto

Tue Sep 30, 2008 - While the Democrats point fingers at the Republicans for the failure of this bailout bill, I seriously wonder if this bill was meant to fail. This from Jake Tapper's Political Punch:
Yes, House Republicans didn't deliver many votes and 66% of them voted against the bill.

But considering that only a dozen votes needed to switch in order to provide a different outcome, and 95 Democrats in the House voted against it, critics are now wondering why couldn't House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., have assured a different outcome considering how important she said its passage was?

Rep. Hank Johnson, D-Ga., told me yesterday that he felt no pressure at all to vote for the bill.

"For me it was an easy decision," Johnson said. "The bill has nothing in there that mandates workouts of these foreclosures that are pending. We have up to 5 million that are meant to occur over the next year."
Felt no pressure? Hank Johnson is a freshman congressman who assumed office in 2007...what does he mean he felt no pressure to tow the party line? If this bill was as necessary as Pelosi says it was, we only have two choices here; either she's completely ineffective and incompetent as a Speaker, as she was unable to rally her own party (95 voted against the bill), or she's completely full of sh*t and allowed this bill to fail by not even bothering to lean on Democrats. Either way, we have to question her ability to lead the congress.

Karl Rove did a great job of savaging Nancy Pelosi yesterday for her seeming lack of effectiveness.
