Was Barack Obama a member of the Socialist New Party? By Rizzuto Wed Oct 08, 2008 - I'll reserve full judgement for now and update as the fact's come in, but Politically Drunk on Power makes a pretty persuasive argument. In June sources released information that during his campaign for the State Senate in Illinois, Barack Obama was endorsed by an organization known as the Chicago "New Party". The 'New Party' was a political party established by the Democratic Socialists of America (the DSA) to push forth the socialist principles of the DSA by focusing on winnable elections at a local level and spreading the Socialist movement upwards. The admittedly Socialist Organization experienced a moderate rise in numbers between 1995 and 1999. By 1999, however, the Socialist 'New Party' was essentially defunct after losing a supreme court challenge that ruled the organizations "fusion" reform platform as unconstitutional. The continue, quoting this archived update on the New Party website: "New Party members are busy knocking on doors, hammering down lawn signs, and phoning voters to support NP candidates this fall. Here are some of our key races...The author of the blog continues with an editorial from Progressive Populist Magazine, which refers to Obama as a New Party member, and a New Party website Democratic Socialist Party of America newsletter which more or less does the same. If this story was a swimming pool, I'm hesitant to dive in head first, but like I said, I'll keep an eye on it. I need more proof that he was an actual member of the party, not just a lackey who got an endorsement. Read the full story at Politically Drunk on Power! Update: Linked by Jammie Wearing Fool who offers further commentary. He's not quite as hesitant as me. American Thinker picks it up! Maybe this dog'll hunt. Lucianne picks it up! It's spreading!
