You know what really grinds my gears? Transit Prices.

I’m sorry to tap a topic as localized and self indulgent as the price of mass transit here in New York City, but the recent announcement by the Metropolitan Transit Authority that they’ll be increasing fares and cutting service next month really grinds my gears.

How does this play nationally you ask? As Nicole Gelinas rightly pointed out today, 2/3rds of the economic stimulus money I’m supposed to receive beginning next month (about 33 dollars), is going to be swallowed up by the increased fares. That should leave me just about enough for a number 2 value meal at McDonalds when all is said and done.

What should this experience teach us? No matter how much money the incompetent son of a bitch at the top promises to you, there’s some incompetent son of a bitch just below him ready to gobble it up before it ever lands in your wallet.

Can someone please explain to me how the Metropolitan Transit Authority, an agency with a monopoly on transportation in one of the world’s largest cities, can’t manage to turn a profit?
