Frum should be thanking Mark Levin, not attacking him Update with Audio By Rizzuto Tue Jul 28, 2009 - Recently, author and columnist David Frum has engaged in a series of attacks against conservative talk show host Mark Levin. For the most part, Frum’s attacks concentrate on Levin’s style, which he asserts is “doom and gloom”. Frum’s real problem is that talk show hosts (and their listeners for that matter) are not his type of conservative; a holier than thou lot content to engage in political bargaining and the soft peddling of conservatism. That’s not to say Frum is not an intelligent guy, but he is undoubtedly drunk on the idea of his own intellectual superiority, seeing Levin’s uncompromising, firebrand style as beneath him and therefore a detriment to the movement. Levin might not charm the beltway insiders like Frum, but I’d hardly call him a detriment to the movement. As of my writing of this article, Mark Levin’s book is now in its 12th week on the New York Times best seller list, to the consternation of liberals and conservative elitists alike. On the other hand, Frum’s book, Comeback: Conservatism That Can Win Again, has barely sold 5,000 copies. Does the fact that Levin’s book has sold over 900,000 copies make it a better book? Of course not (although it is, I’ve read them both.) While the quantity sold might not attest to quality, it certainly makes it a more influential and relevant book, which goes to the heart of the real issue at hand. Levin’s contribution to the modern conservative movement has been immeasurable compared to a lightweight like Frum. Levin is in the cars and homes of millions of people each and every night. What people like Frum don’t consider is that fact that Levin and others like him have brought thousands, if not millions of new conservatives into the movement. Conservative talk show hosts are part of the reason Frum is able to sell even a measly 5,000 copies, as many of those who purchased his book were likely introduced to conservatism by conservative talk. Frum, who should be thankful for the reach of hosts like Levin, seems more content to sit back and take pot shots at Levin’s style with his pea shooter. The difference between Levin and Frum is obvious; Levin gets results, Frum doesn’t. For such a smart guy, Frum seems unable to see the fact that without powerful voices on the radio, his voice would be even smaller than it already is. Update Just as I finished posting, my friend and colleague Rich Sementa, super-producer of The Mark Levin Show, shot me the audio of The Great One's response to Mr. Frum. Classic Levin.
