Obama's Sister Souljah Moment? How exactly...? Update
By Rizzuto

Mon Mar 17, 2008 - Honestly, I just can’t see how Obama’s silver tongue can get him out of this tomorrow. This from the The New York Times:
Eric Scheie, a libertarian who blogs at Classical Values, thinks the candidate has reached his Sister Souljah moment: “I have no idea what he plans to say, but I think he still has a chance — a slim one, but a chance — to turn what seems like a mortal blow to his advantage. He needs to repudiate his own past, though, and he must use the Wright controversy as an argument and an opportunity to call for real change in race relations. If he admits the mistakes — and the racism — of Wright and himself for buying into it, it might work. But he’ll have to do so convincingly. Reassuring platitudes won’t cut it.”
Obama is in quite the conundrum. If he admits that he’s wrong for having attended Wrights sermons, he’s admitting to having been led astray for 20 years, and not awakening until the national media caught wind of the content of those sermons. The only explanation can be that Obama has the intelligence of a turnip.

If he decides that he’s going to simply enlighten us on race relations, he’ll come off as a hypocrite for having attended years of hate filled, anti-white, black separatist sermons. Someone whose “spiritual advisor” is guilty of racism seems like the last person I want schooling me on the finer points of ‘the larger issue of race in this campaign’.

If he’s going to go the denial route, he’s going to expect us to buy the idea that in 20 years worth of church services, the only America hating screed the Reverend Wright ever went on was on July 22nd 2007. Hard to swallow, even to the most devoted of his followers.

Perhaps Obama’s greatest hurdle is one which Scheie pointed out in the Times article…Obama is going to need more than platitudes to move beyond this episode, the question is, does he have it in him?

Update: A quick exit question. The sermon in which reverend Wright said that "America's chickens...have come home...to roost..." in that really evil sounding manner, happened the weekend after 9/11. Obama didn't take his family to church the weekend after 9/11? Just a thought...
