You know grandpa is a little senile when...

Wed Apr 23, 2008 - You know grandpa is a little senile when:
Jimmy Carter said here on Monday that in talks in Damascus, Syria, over the last several days, he obtained a significant concession from the militant group Hamas regarding Israeli-Palestinian peace and found Syrian leaders eager for a full peace treaty with Israel.

Mr. Carter said he extracted a promise from Hamas to respect the creation of a Palestinian state in the West Bank and Gaza Strip negotiated by Hamas's rivals in the Palestinian Authority if it were ratified by a referendum of the Palestinian people.

Furthermore, Syrian leaders told him, he said, that "about 85 percent" of the issues between Syria's government and Israel had been resolved in prior negotiations and that it wanted a peace deal "as soon as possible."

Given the general pessimism surrounding Israeli-Arab peace, Mr. Carter's upbeat assessment had a contrarian quality to it, as did his decision to meet in Damascus with President Bashar al-Assad of Syria and the Hamas leadership. The Bush administration has shunned Syria and considers Hamas a terrorist group, as does Israel, and had asked him not to hold the meetings.
I love it -- the old man throwing his hands up and announcing to the world that peace is imminent... 85% of the problems have been solved and we shouldn't worry because now the Syrians who have been working with the Iranians to make more deadly missiles are really truly open to peace. Hamas, the former terrorist organization that would not stop rocket attacks against Israel while they complained loudly of the embargo, is standing proudly next to Syria ready to negotiate.

You'd think after sixty years of this dog and pony show people would finally get the hint. Maybe now that a senile, old man is practically parodying the peace attempt with his assault on logic and good sense we can have a final belly laugh and dismiss the Islamist Hamas (who closes down Christian schools, plans to ban missionary activity and make all women wear Islamic hijab) and the Syrians.

You know when there will be peace in the Middle East? When they put down the Koran and finally extend the olive branch with the true desire to make secular governments with the people's best interest at hearts. Until then, I'll keep listening to punk rock and siding with the people who do not close down schools of rival religions nor force women to wear head coverings.
